Pre-Trip Activities
Before going to the museum the teacher will introduce the students to Maggie Walker with a brief discussion and activity book. The teacher will read the story portion of the activity book, Maggie Lena Walker: First Female Bank President by Carole Marsh which is part of the One Thousand Readers series, to the students. The following are a list of questions the teacher will ask the students before, during and after reading the story to them.
Does anyone know who Maggie Walker is?
Where was Maggie Walker born?
What was Maggie Walker's career?
Besides banking, what else is Maggie Walker known for?
What were Maggie Walker's accomplishments?
Who was Maggie's mother and what did she do?
How did Maggie's husband Armstead die?
When and how did she die?
Why do you think Maggie Walker is important to study?
Additionally, the teacher will order a travel trunk from the Maggie Walker Museum to explore with the students before going on their field trip. The trunk includes clothing from Maggie's time, books about influential African American's of the time, games and activities, posters, and many more interactive artifacts. The teacher will take out multiple artifacts from the trunk and give only three items to the table groups. The teacher will ask the students to explore the artifacts in their groups. After ten minutes, the groups will share their artifacts with the class, making sure to give an explanation of their importance as well as their relevance to Maggie Walker's life. After sharing the artifacts the teacher will give the students a three, two, one to fill out. The students will start by writing three things they learned about Maggie Walker and the time period, two things they think they will see at the museum, and one question they still have about Maggie Walker and her life. These activities will familiarize the students with general information about Maggie Walker and prepare them for their field trip to the museum.
